Action Cameras
Cameras for the road and as evidence.
4 products
In 2026 action cameras in the Netherlands are no longer just a toy for downhill mountain bikers: more and more commuters mount one as evidence in case of a collision, because insurers increasingly accept video footage as decisive proof in liability disputes. On top of that, mountain bikers on the Veluwe use them to record singletracks, and road cyclists share rides via Strava and YouTube. The camera plays essentially the same role as a car's dashcam.
Four features are essential for cycling use: high resolution with smooth frame rate (4K at 60 fps is standard in 2026), a solid IP rating (IPX4 minimum, preferably IPX8 for Dutch rain), strong image stabilisation (GoPro HyperSmooth 6 or DJI RockSteady 3) and enough battery life. Be aware that battery life typically halves on cold winter days near 0 degrees, so carry a spare battery for longer rides. Modern 360 degree cameras such as the Insta360 X4 have the advantage that you choose the shooting direction only in post, but they cost more than traditional action cameras.
Besides the camera itself a proper microSD card (class A2 V30 or higher for 4K), a sturdy bike mount (handlebar, helmet or chest strap) and ideally a spare battery are indispensable. Prices range from around 150 euros for entry models like the Akaso Brave 8 Lite to 550 euros for the GoPro Hero 13 Black or DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro.

Buying tips
- Image stabilisation is crucial on bumpy Dutch cycle paths: look for GoPro HyperSmooth 6 or DJI RockSteady 3, otherwise your footage is unusable.
- Choose at least IPX4 for rain resistance, though IPX8 (fully submersible to 10 metres) is better suited to Dutch autumn weather.
- Account for battery life halving near 0 degrees: a GoPro Hero 13 drops from about 90 to 50 minutes of 4K recording, so always carry a spare battery.
- Use a class A2 V30 or higher microSD card (for example the SanDisk Extreme 128GB) for stable 4K 60fps recording, otherwise footage will stutter.
- Invest in a good mounting kit: a handlebar clamp, helmet mount and chest strap together give you the most flexibility across commuting, MTB and road cycling.
