Bicycle theft costs the Netherlands around 700 million euros a year, and with the explosive growth of e-bikes and speed pedelecs costing over 3000 euros, a GPS tracker has become almost indispensable in 2026. Where a sturdy lock used to be enough, insurers such as ENRA, Kingpolis and ANWB now increasingly require a tracker, or offer a discount (typically 10 to 15 percent off the premium) for one. The reasoning is straightforward: professional theft rings move stolen e-bikes towards Eastern Europe within hours, and without an active tracking system the bike is almost always gone for good.

There are broadly three tracker categories. Bluetooth tags such as Apple AirTag and Tile are cheap (30 to 40 euros) but only work near other phones and come with Apple's anti-stalking alert that warns thieves. True GPS trackers like the Invoxia Bike Tracker use a LoRa or 4G connection and actually follow the bike globally, at around 99 euros plus a 3 to 8 euro monthly subscription. Professional systems like Tracefy partner with Bike Hunters, a Dutch recovery team reporting a 90 percent recovery rate.

For bikes worth over 3000 euros many insurers additionally require the Kiwa SCM certification, which certifies the tracker for weather resistance, signal strength and alarm-centre connection. In 2026 this matters more than ever, because new policy conditions simply refuse to pay out on pricey e-bikes or cargo bikes without an SCM-certified tracker.

Buying tips

  1. An AirTag is cheap but warns a thief after a few hours with Apple's anti-stalking alert, making it unsuitable as the sole protection for an expensive e-bike.
  2. Always check your policy: insurers such as ENRA and Kingpolis often require a Kiwa SCM-certified tracker on bikes over 3000 euros, or coverage is void.
  3. For bikes over 3000 euros a Kiwa SCM-rated tracker (such as Tracefy or BikeTrax) is mandated by most Dutch e-bike insurance policies.
  4. Budget 3 to 8 euros per month for subscription fees on true GPS trackers like Invoxia or Tracefy; an AirTag has no subscription but also does not truly track.
  5. Mount the tracker as stealthily as possible, for example under the saddle, inside the bottle cage or hidden in the stem, so a thief cannot find it within 30 seconds.
