Best accessories for Electric Bikes 2026

Electric bikes with pedal assist.

The e-bike has become indispensable in the Netherlands and now accounts for around 56% of all new bicycle sales. Where electric bikes were primarily seen as a tool for people over 50 a decade ago, you now see all age groups comfortably covering city trips, countryside tours and commutes with pedal assistance. A new e-bike typically costs between 1,800 and 3,500 euros, with premium models from brands like Gazelle, QWIC, Stella and Trek going considerably higher.

Bosch dominates the motor market with around 70% share, followed by Shimano Steps and Yamaha. A typical e-bike delivers 60 to 120 kilometres per charge, depending on assistance level, terrain and battery capacity. Legally, an e-bike counts as a regular bicycle as long as assistance cuts off at 25 km/h, so helmets are not mandatory.

However, insurers impose strict requirements: for bikes above 2,000 euros an ART-2 approved lock is almost always required, and theft coverage often demands ART-3. E-bikes are popular with commuters covering 10 to 25 kilometres daily, with older riders wanting to stay mobile longer, and with families looking to leave the car at home. The e-bike fits perfectly with Dutch cycling culture and the extensive bike path network.

Which accessories matter most?

For e-bikes the most important accessories are an ART-2 or ART-3 approved lock — think the ABUS Bordo Granit XPlus 6500 or the AXA Fold Pro 100 — because most insurers require this above 2,000 euros and otherwise you receive nothing after theft. A secondary lock (chain or U-lock) such as the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit is wise for pricier models.

For visibility in the dark winter months, proper lighting is crucial: the Busch & Müller IQ-X headlamp is ideal because it runs off the e-bike battery and never runs flat. A helmet with integrated LEDs like the Lumos Ultra boosts visibility, even though helmets are not legally required. Waterproof panniers such as the Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic are indispensable for commuting given Dutch rain. A phone mount with vibration damping, like the Quad Lock with Vibration Dampener, protects your iPhone camera module from motor-induced vibration damage. Finally: a sturdy battery cover and a good outdoor bike cover for when your bike sits in the rain.
