Cargo Bikes

Transport bikes for children or freight.

The bakfiets (cargo bike) is as Dutch as stroopwafels: an estimated 100,000-plus ride around, and in cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht and Haarlem they are a daily sight during the morning rush when parents take their children to school. There are two main types: the two-wheeled cargo bike (long john style, agile, sporty) and the three-wheeled cargo bike (more stable, more cargo space, but trickier in corners). Babboe was for years the most popular budget brand (2,000 to 3,500 euros), but made heavy headlines in 2024 with a major recall for frame cracks — thousands of bikes were called back and the brand's reputation took a serious hit. At the premium end Urban Arrow dominates with its electric Family model, starting around 5,500 euros and even seen as a status symbol by Amsterdam parents.

Other brands like Riese & Müller, Bullitt, Cangoo and Johnny Loco also have loyal followings. A cargo bike typically fits 2 to 4 children, plus groceries, a dog or the weekly haul from the Jumbo supermarket. Almost all new cargo bikes are sold as electric because riding unassisted with 60 kilos of kids over the Amstel bridge is simply too heavy.

The bakfiets symbolises the 'school run' culture and a consciously car-free family life.

Which accessories matter most?

For a cargo bike, the safety of your most precious cargo — your children — comes first. A sturdy rain cover or tent is essential in the Netherlands; original Urban Arrow or Babboe covers fit best, but universal versions also work. Proper seatbelts or a 5-point harness per seating spot are mandatory; check regularly for wear. Since cargo bikes often cost over 4,000 euros, an ART-3 approved lock is necessary: a heavy chain lock like the ABUS Granit CityChain X-Plus 1060, or combining two locks, is common practice.

Invest in powerful front and rear lighting, for example a Busch & Müller IQ-XS connected to the e-bike battery, plus a bright rear light for visibility. A waterproof cover protects the box from weather when parked outside. For the kids, soft seat cushions and a toy net are handy. A children's helmet is recommended though not required. Finally, consider a double kickstand if one is not fitted as standard — crucial for safely loading and unloading children.
