The Netherlands is the only country in the world where wearing a bike helmet is the exception rather than the rule: only about three percent of Dutch cyclists wear one. For ordinary city bikes and commutes a helmet is not legally required, but attitudes are shifting. Since 2017 a helmet has been mandatory for speed pedelecs, and specifically one carrying the NTA 8776 certification. Helmet use is also clearly rising among e-bike riders, partly driven by campaigns from ANWB and Fietsersbond.
That standard is tougher than the regular EN 1078 bike helmet norm and offers more protection at the higher speeds these bikes reach. When buying, check fit (head circumference in cm), ventilation, weight and whether the helmet features MIPS technology for added protection against angular impacts. Leading brands include Abus, Bell, Giro, KED, Lazer, MET and Dutch brand Nutcase.
Prices start around 30 euros for a solid basic helmet and go up to 250 euros for premium models with MIPS and integrated lighting. For commuting, models with a built-in rear light such as the Abus Pedelec 2.0 are very popular.

Buying tips
- Riding a speed pedelec? You are legally required to wear a helmet with NTA 8776 certification, a regular bike helmet is not enough.
- Measure your head circumference just above the eyebrows and follow the manufacturer's sizing chart, as helmet fit varies significantly between brands.
- Consider a helmet with MIPS, which slides 10-15 mm during an angled impact to reduce rotational forces on the brain.
- For commuting, helmets with built-in rear lights are a great choice, such as the Abus Pedelec 2.0 or Lumos Ultra.
- Replace your helmet after any crash and in any case every 5 years, since EPS foam weakens over time from UV and sweat.
