Our verdict

A solid, good-looking city helmet with excellent visibility thanks to its integrated rear light. A strong pick for regular city and e-bike riders, but look elsewhere if you ride a speed pedelec or want MIPS.

Detailed review

The ABUS Urban-I 3.0 is built for the daily Dutch commuter: someone who needs visibility on dark winter mornings and dependable protection at busy city junctions. Helmet use among regular cyclists in the Netherlands still sits at around 3%, but adoption is climbing fast among e-bike riders and long-distance commuters — exactly the audience this helmet targets. The Zoom Ace fit system is genuinely pleasant: one-handed micro-adjustment that still works with winter gloves on. At 280 g in size M, you forget you're wearing it during a 40-minute ride to work.

The integrated three-mode LED rear light pays real dividends in Dutch winters when you're heading home in the dark at half past four: no separate light to charge or forget. On the safety side, the helmet leans on a classical EPS shell with CE EN 1078 certification. There is no MIPS or SPIN, so oblique-impact performance lags behind pricier options such as the Lumos Ultra or POC Omne Air SPIN.

Speed pedelec riders should look elsewhere entirely — Dutch law has required NTA 8776 certification for speed pedelecs since 2017, and the Urban-I 3.0 does not meet that standard. The twelve vents work hard, but the closed top can feel warm on 30-degree July days. For everyday use on a regular city bike or e-bike, though, it remains a thoughtful pick with the best built-in visibility in its price bracket.
