Child Seats

Compare child seats on safety, comfort and ease of use

The Netherlands has by far the highest 'cycling with children' rate in Europe: from babies of nine months through to school age you see them everywhere on the front or back of the bike. Child seats come in two main types: front seats (mounted to the head tube or top tube, for children of roughly 9 months to 3 years, up to 15 kg) and rear seats (on the rack or frame, up to roughly 5-6 years and 22 kg). Dutch law requires a proper footrest and harness so little feet cannot end up in the spokes.

For front seats, Bobike (truly Dutch, since 1985) and Yepp (now part of Thule) are market leaders; for rear seats Hamax, Britax Romer, Polisport and again Yepp/Thule are the top players. For rear seats pay attention to the mounting system: clamping on the frame tube is more universal but does not grip every frame equally well, while rack mounting on MIK or standard racks feels much less stable if the rack itself is light.

Prices range from 60 euros for a basic Polisport to 200 euros for a premium seat with sleeping cushion and suspension. Do not forget a helmet for your child, which is always wise even though not legally required.

Buying tips

  1. Choose a front seat for babies and toddlers up to 15 kg, so the child is in your line of sight and tends to stay calmer during the ride.
  2. Rear seats with frame mounting (e.g. Yepp Maxi EasyFit) feel more stable than rack-only models, especially on light e-bikes.
  3. Check compatibility with your frame or rack: some e-bikes have a battery on the rear rack that blocks a seat, and sloping top tubes do not fit all front seats.
  4. Pick a model with high back support and a sleeping cushion if your child tends to doze off on the bike.
  5. Fit your child with a proper helmet, and although not legally required many Dutch parents do.
