Compare bike locks on security, price and ease of use

In a country where roughly 600,000 bikes are stolen every year, a proper lock is not a luxury but a necessity. Theft risk is especially high in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, and leaving an unsecured bike at an unsafe parking area is essentially asking for trouble.

The Dutch ART certification is what matters: an independent rating from one star (light) up to five stars (heaviest). Nearly all Dutch bike insurers require at least ART-2 for ordinary bikes, and ART-3 or higher for e-bikes over 2000 euros. Without the right certification, insurers simply will not pay out. The dominant brands are AXA (the biggest in the Netherlands, also the default frame ring lock on city bikes), Germany's Abus, Kryptonite, and Dutch brand Trelock.

Prices range from around 40 euros for a basic ART-2 chain lock to over 150 euros for a heavy ART-4 folding or U-lock. The best practice is to combine a frame ring lock with a chain or U-lock through the frame and a fixed object.

Buying tips

  1. Always check the ART rating: at least ART-2 for city bikes, ART-3 for e-bikes over 2000 euros, or your insurance will not pay out.
  2. Combine a frame ring lock with a chain or U-lock through the frame and a fixed object, never rely on the ring lock alone.
  3. A U-lock is usually better protected than a chain lock at the same price point, but less flexible in daily use.
  4. Mind the weight: a 2.5 kg ART-4 chain lock is no fun to carry on longer rides, consider a folding lock instead.
  5. Never buy a second-hand lock without the key code documentation, as replacement keys will be impossible to order.
