Our verdict
The Hiplok Gold is the best choice for commuters who want a serious lock without a backpack. Mechanically on par with ART-2 and wearable around the waist — provided you insure an e-bike separately or use it on a regular city bike without an insurance requirement.
Detailed review
The Hiplok Gold is one of those products you only really understand after using it: a 10 mm hardened steel chain inside a textile sleeve, with a clip buckle on one end and an integrated lock on the other, so you can wear it around your waist like a belt. For bike commuters in Amsterdam or Utrecht riding 10 to 15 kilometres a day through the city, that is a serious upgrade: instead of 2 kilos of chain on your back, it hangs around your hips and disappears under a blazer or raincoat. It sounds like a gimmick; after a week it is hard to go back to a backpack chain. Mechanically Hiplok does not compromise. The 10 mm links edge past the 9 mm of the ABUS CityChain 1010, and the Sold Secure Gold rating places this lock internationally in the highest category below Diamond — effectively comparable to ART-2. Common bolt cutters have no meaningful chance; for a thief it means pulling an angle grinder, which is loud and risky on a street or at an NS bike rack. The cylinder is a disc cylinder with decent anti-pick resistance — not at ABUS Plus level but more than enough against the realistic threat for a ride-away theft.
The Dutch side of the story is a bit messier. Hiplok carries no ART sticker, so for e-bike insurance via Univé, ENRA or Centraal Beheer you risk having a theft claim denied. That makes the Gold an excellent primary lock for an expensive city bike, road bike or gravel bike you do not insure separately, and a strong secondary lock alongside an ART-2 lock like the AXA Newton Pro 100 on your e-bike. Against a conventional chain in a backpack the Hiplok wins comfortably on comfort and discretion; against a folding lock like the ABUS Bordo 6000 you give up neat frame mounting but gain reach — the Hiplok Gold wraps around far thicker posts and trees.
Honest limits: the wearable system works best over slim trousers and a jacket that ends at the hip. With a long winter coat the Hiplok sits either above or below your hips and both feel awkward. Riders with a waist over 107 cm should look at the XL version. And the weight is real: 2.4 kg becomes noticeable in your lower back after 40 minutes of riding, especially bent forward on a gravel bike rather than sitting upright on a city bike. Finally: the clip buckle is strong and has been reliable in the market for eight years, but it is visually obvious — thieves know what you are wearing.
Who is this for?
- City commuters who prefer to wear their lock rather than pack it
- Road and gravel riders needing a serious lock on longer outings
- Owners of expensive city bikes without an e-bike insurance requirement
What to watch out for
- No ART: not suitable as the sole lock on an insured e-bike
- Wearable system less pleasant with a long winter coat or a waist above 107 cm
