With more than 200 rainy days a year and a culture where the bike truly carries everything, panniers are indispensable in the Netherlands. Every proper city bike has a rear rack, and thanks to the Dutch standard for rack dimensions most panniers fit practically any bike. You see them everywhere: parents carrying groceries, students heading to the train, commuters with their laptops.
The key criterion is waterproofing, with German manufacturer Ortlieb as the global gold standard (IP64 or higher, welded seams, roll-top closure). Ortlieb's Back-Roller Classic has been the reference for decades, though there are excellent alternatives from Basil (Dutch, stylish), AGU (Dutch, sporty), Vaude and New Looxs. For train commuters a quick-release system (Rixen & Kaul KLICKfix or Ortlieb QL) is important so you can detach the bag in seconds.
Prices start at around 30 euros for a single basic bag and rise to 180 euros for a set of premium waterproof panniers. When buying, check volume (20-30 litres per bag is standard), the hooks (do they fit your rack?) and whether you can safely fit a laptop inside.

Buying tips
- Fully waterproof panniers with welded seams and a roll-top closure (like Ortlieb) are no luxury in the Netherlands, not just for downpours but also heavy drizzle.
- Check that the hooks fit your rack, as some racks have thicker tubing that cheap hooks will not clamp onto.
- For train commuters a QL3/QL2 or KLICKfix quick-release system is a real bonus, otherwise you are lugging the rack around by the handles every day.
- Choose a bag with a dedicated inner sleeve or laptop compartment if you carry work gear, otherwise everything piles up at the bottom.
- Reflective panels or a built-in light clip noticeably improve your visibility after dark.
