Our verdict

A beautiful, crafted object that belongs on a classic city bike, but not a serious option for year-round Dutch cycling. Buy Brooks for the feel, buy Ortlieb or Vaude if you want dry contents.

Detailed review

The Brooks Brick Lane Panniers are honest: these are style bags, not workhorses. Brooks, the legendary English maker of leather saddles, designed these for the city rider who values aesthetics and craft — not the commuter who needs to arrive guaranteed dry. The waxed cotton with leather accents looks stunning on a classic city bike or vintage racer, and the material develops a lovely patina over the years that only grows more characterful. For a summer trip to the market, a ride to friends or an evening drink in town they're perfect — and the included shoulder strap makes them easy to carry once you've parked.

But let's be honest about what they aren't: waterproof. In the Netherlands, where it rains more than 200 days a year, a 'water-repellent' bag is fundamentally a problem. In a light shower the waxed coating holds out for a few minutes, but in a proper Dutch autumn downpour — the kind of horizontal rain you get on the IJssel dyke — your stuff is simply wet. The 12 litres per bag is also tight: barely enough for a laptop and a sandwich, let alone a serious grocery run.

Weigh the 165 euro price against the Vaude Aqua Back (120 euros, 24 L, truly waterproof) and the value equation becomes hard to defend. This is a bag you buy because it looks beautiful and because you want to carry the Brooks heritage on your Gazelle or Workcycles, not because it performs best. For hipster commuters in Amsterdam-Zuid or canal-side Utrecht riders that's a perfectly valid reason — aesthetics matter and not everything on a bike has to be functionally perfect. But don't buy it for year-round commuting in wind and rain; buy it for sunshine, style and the love of beautiful things.
