Road Bikes

Lightweight bikes for speed.

The racefiets (road bike) is, in the Netherlands, the bike of the cycling enthusiast, the Strava athlete and the Sunday club ride. With drop bars, narrow tyres, an aggressive riding position and a total weight between 6.8 kg (UCI limit) and 9 kg, it is built for speed, efficiency and long distances. Popular brands on the Dutch market include Specialized (Tarmac, Roubaix), Trek (Domane, Émonda), Cube (Attain, Litening), Cannondale (Synapse, SuperSix), Scott (Addict) and Giant (TCR, Defy), with prices starting around 1,500 euros for an alloy entry-level bike and running up to 12,000 euros or more for top carbon models with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 or SRAM Red AXS.

The endurance geometry is more popular than pure racing geometry because Dutch roads are not always smooth and comfort matters on long rides. Since the rise of disc brakes, electronic shifting and gravel variants, the segment is richer and more diverse than ever.

Riding happens on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the Limburg hills (the only real 'mountains' we have), the Veluwe and of course the coastal strip for headwind training. Road cyclists often belong to tight club cultures, with Sunday rides, NTFU tours and classics like the Amstel Gold Race for amateurs.

Which accessories matter most?

For a road bike, priorities are weight, aerodynamics and safety. An aero helmet with good ventilation like the Giro Aether MIPS or Lazer Vento KinetiCore is essential — always wear it, even though it is not mandatory. Clipless pedal systems such as Shimano SPD-SL or Look Kéo require matching road shoes (Shimano RC7, Specialized Torch 3.0) for optimal power transfer. A saddle bag with a spare tube, tyre levers and a mini pump or CO2 inflator is indispensable for roadside flats.

A GPS bike computer like the Garmin Edge 540 or Wahoo Elemnt Roam is almost standard for training and navigation, often paired with a heart rate strap and power meter (4iiii, Quarq, Favero Assioma). Two bottle cages with Elite or Tacx bottles keep you hydrated on long rides. Cycling glasses with interchangeable lenses (Oakley Jawbreaker, Rudy Project) protect against wind and insects. For stopping mid-ride, a lightweight U-lock like the Hiplok Z LOK Combo is practical — a heavy chain lock has no place on a race bike you usually keep in sight.
