Our verdict

The Lezyne Lite Drive 1000XL is the best sport front light with USB-C under 55 euros, provided you accept it isn't StVZO certified. Perfect for training rides and off-road, the wrong pick for daily commuting.

Detailed review

The Lezyne Lite Drive 1000XL is a light for the fast road rider and ambitious mountain biker — a category of cyclist smaller in the Netherlands than in Belgium or Germany, but certainly real and with its own demands. At 1000 lumens max it's the most powerful light in this comparison, slightly brighter even than the Knog Blinder 900. For a road bike riding 35 km/h on an unlit rural road in North Brabant or Limburg, or a mountain biker tackling the evening flow trails at Landgraaf or Austerlitz, that power is no overkill — you simply need more forward visibility than a city rider. Important caveat: like the Knog Blinder 900, this Lezyne is not StVZO approved. That means a symmetric round beam with no horizontal cut-off, and very real dazzling of oncoming riders on a polder bike path.

For Dutch legal permanent commuting lighting this is not the right light — pick the Sigma Aura 80 or Trelock LS 660 instead. For sport, training and expedition the story changes and the Lezyne is excellent. USB-C charging is a big plus over the Knog (USB-A) and Sigma (micro-USB), and the 4-LED runtime indicator on top shows remaining juice at a glance. The 3350 mAh battery gives 1.5 hours at 1000 lumens or up to 20 hours in eco — enough for an evening ride on full power or multiple commutes at lower settings.

The IPX7 rating is strictly the second-best in this list (only the Knog's IP67 adds full dust tightness), meaning temporary immersion to 1 metre — plenty for any Dutch downpour or unexpected puddle. The CNC-machined aluminium body feels premium and doubles as a heat sink during sustained max output. Watch the rubber mounting strap: on smooth round aluminium bars it can slip during rough off-road sessions — a strip of rubber underneath helps. As with all non-StVZO lights: use only the steady mode on public roads, never pulse or strobe.
