Compare e-bike insurance 2026

Last updated: 15 April 2026

An e-bike of 2500 euros or more is almost unthinkable in the Netherlands without bike insurance. Yet the market is opaque: six major providers, dozens of packages, and premiums that double with the wrong choice. This guide compares every relevant 2026 policy.

Do you have to insure your e-bike?

Legally, bike insurance is not mandatory for a regular e-bike or pedelec. Only speed pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) require third-party liability cover, since they legally count as mopeds.

In practice, not insuring an e-bike worth over 2000 euros is financially unwise. The Netherlands sees roughly 85,000 e-bike thefts per year and the risk in big cities is substantial. Storm damage, collision damage and battery system short-circuits are cost items that quickly pass 1000 euros.

Many people also lease their e-bike or buy on credit. Leasing companies such as Lease a Bike, B.V. and Bike to Work almost always require all-risk insurance and sometimes arrange it automatically. For private purchase, you sort it yourself.

Types of bike insurance

There are three main types:

  • Theft only: covers only theft and (sometimes) attempted break-ins. Premium around 6-9 euros a month for a 2500-euro e-bike. No cover for damage, crashes or battery faults.
  • All-risk (casco): covers theft plus all damage (falls, collisions, storms, battery defects out of warranty). Premium 10-16 euros a month. This is the most-chosen type for e-bikes above 2000 euros.
  • Additional liability (WA): covers damage you cause to others with your bike. For regular e-bikes often already covered via your household liability policy (AVP); for speed pedelecs required separately.

Mind the difference between new-for-old value (for three years you get a new bike of the same type) and day value (you receive the depreciated amount). New-for-old costs 15-25% more in premium, but on a year-2 theft the difference can be 800 euros.

Excess is usually 50 to 150 euros per incident. Opting for zero excess raises the premium by 15-20%.

What does bike insurance cost?

The average premium for all-risk e-bike insurance in 2026 sits between 8 and 14 euros per month. The final price depends on:

  • Bike value: a 4000-euro e-bike costs about 50% more than a 2500-euro one
  • Postcode: Amsterdam (1011-1019), Rotterdam (3011-3023) and Utrecht (3511-3515) count as risk areas, premium +20-40%
  • Bike type: fatbikes and speed pedelecs carry the highest rates, regular city e-bikes the lowest
  • Lock ART level: ART-3 instead of ART-2 gives 5-10% discount
  • GPS tracker: Invoxia or built-in tracker gives 5-15% discount
  • Excess: 150 euros excess is 10-15% cheaper than 50 euros

Concrete example: an Abus Granit X-Plus 540 user in Leiden with a 3000-euro e-bike pays around 9.50 euros a month all-risk at Centraal Beheer. The same bike in Amsterdam-Oost with only an AXA Defender comes to 14.80 euros a month.

Comparison of the major insurers

Below the main requirements and premiums for 2026, for a 3000-euro e-bike in an average postcode:

  • ENRA: lock ART-3 required, GPS recommended, premium €11.50/mo all-risk, max value €6000, new-for-old three years. Strong claims record.
  • Kingpolis: lock ART-3 required, GPS mandatory over €3500, premium €10.80/mo, max €8000, also covers battery outside warranty.
  • ANWB (Unigarant): lock ART-2 (ART-3 for fatbikes), GPS recommended, premium €12.40/mo, 10% member discount, strict postcode pricing.
  • Univé: lock ART-2 (ART-3 >€3000), GPS optional, premium €9.90/mo – often cheapest provider. New-for-old cover 36 months.
  • Unigarant: lock ART-2 with ART-3 for pricier models, premium €11.20/mo, strong claims app.
  • Centraal Beheer: lock ART-3 for e-bikes >€2500, GPS not mandatory, premium €9.60/mo. Combined discount with contents insurance.

For fatbikes and speed pedelecs ENRA and Kingpolis are the most flexible; Centraal Beheer and Univé are usually cheapest for regular city e-bikes.

How do you lower your premium?

Five effective ways to reduce your premium:

  • Upgrade to an ART-3 lock: spending 50 euros extra (for example Abus Bordo 6000 instead of an ART-2 folding lock) yields 5-10% discount = 6-14 euros per year back.
  • Install a GPS tracker: an Apple AirTag (€35) is not enough for a discount, but an approved tracker such as Invoxia or VanMoof's PowerBank is. 5-15% premium reduction.
  • Pick a higher excess: moving from 50 to 150 euros saves 10-15% premium.
  • Pay yearly instead of monthly: usually 3-5% discount.
  • Combine with contents or liability policy: Centraal Beheer, ANWB and Univé offer 5-10% bundle discounts.

Note: no claim in year one gets you a no-claim bonus at some insurers in year two. At others there is no no-claim, because bike insurance usually lacks the step system used for cars.

Speed pedelec and mandatory liability insurance

For a speed pedelec, third-party liability insurance is legally required under the Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Act. Without it you cannot even leave your driveway.

Premiums for speed pedelec liability cover in 2026 run 12 to 20 euros per month, excluding any theft or casco cover. Major providers are Univé, Centraal Beheer and ENRA, plus Bovemij Motorverzekering (traditionally a motorcycle insurer) since 2022.

Always combine with all-risk casco: speed pedelecs at 4000-7500 euros are prime theft targets. Total premium (liability + casco) runs 22 to 35 euros per month. Check the policy for the required lock combo – often an ART-3 U-lock plus an ART-2 chain, so two locks at once. See our separate speed pedelec rules guide for the other obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Is the battery covered in bike insurance?

With all-risk usually yes, but only for sudden damage outside manufacturer warranty. Gradual capacity loss (normal wear) is not covered. Kingpolis and ENRA have the most comprehensive battery cover.

What happens if I lose my bike abroad?

Most Dutch bike insurers cover Europe for a maximum number of days per year (usually 60-90). Outside Europe there is generally no cover. Always check policy terms before travelling.

How quickly must I report theft?

Police report within 24 hours and notification to the insurer within 3 days. Keep the police number and the invoices for bike and lock. Without a police report no insurer pays out.

Can I park my e-bike indoors without a lock?

In a locked space (private garage, shed with a lock, station bike park with a card) often yes. In a shared hallway, gallery or storage unit a lock is usually still required. Read the policy for its 'enclosed space' definition.

Does my contents insurance cover my e-bike?

Sometimes, but usually only for theft from inside the home with forced entry and not for theft outside. Cover is typically capped at 1000-2500 euros. For more expensive e-bikes a separate bike policy is almost always needed.
