It rains on more than 200 days a year in the Netherlands, so good rain gear is not a luxury but an essential part of every serious cyclist's kit. Rain gear quality is determined by two numbers: the water column (in millimetres, minimum 10,000 mm for cycling) and breathability (in g/m2/24h, ideally above 10,000). Below that you will be just as wet from sweat inside as from rain outside.
Taped seams are essential for real waterproofing, and a good cycling rain jacket has an extended back panel and long sleeves so you stay covered when leaning forward. For short rides a simple rain poncho (Agu Go, Hock Rain Safe) is cheap and well-ventilated. For commuters or sportier rides brands like Agu (Dutch, great value), Vaude, Gore Wear, Showers Pass and Rapha are the standard.
Prices range from 35 euros (basic poncho) to 350 euros (high-end Gore-Tex jacket). Do not forget rain pants and overshoes, without them you still get soaked from your feet to your knees.

Buying tips
- Check water column (minimum 10,000 mm) and breathability (minimum 10,000 g/m2/24h), otherwise you will be wetter from sweat than from rain.
- Make sure all seams are taped, as a cheap jacket with unsealed seams will leak within 10 minutes.
- A cycling-specific jacket has an extended back panel and pre-shaped sleeves so it does not ride up in cycling position.
- Do not skip overshoes, since wet shoes cool your feet faster than anything else and stay damp for the next day.
- Reflective strips or bright colours make you far more visible to cars on dark rainy evenings.
