Compare bike lights on brightness, battery life and price

Bike lighting is legally required in the Netherlands as soon as it gets dark or visibility is poor (fog, heavy rain). The front must show a white or yellow light, the rear a red one, and flashing lights are not allowed: Dutch law requires a steady, continuously burning light. Most city bikes come equipped with a hub dynamo (typically a Shimano DH series or Shutter Precision), so you are never caught without lights.

Sporty bikes and e-bikes typically use rechargeable USB lights. Look for StVZO certification: this German standard is fully accepted in the Netherlands and guarantees that the beam pattern will not blind oncoming traffic. Without StVZO you may get a wonderfully bright light that dazzles cyclists and drivers alike, and that is illegal on public roads. Leading brands include Busch & Muller, Lezyne, Trelock, Herrmans and Germany's Supernova. For rear lights, AXA, Busch & Muller and Knog dominate.

Front lights range from 15 euros (basic USB) to 150 euros (powerful StVZO lamps with 100 lux or more).

Buying tips

  1. Prefer a light with StVZO certification, which guarantees a beam pattern that does not blind others and is legal on Dutch roads.
  2. Flashing lights are banned in the Netherlands, so a mode that only blinks is not legal for use on public roads.
  3. If your bike has a hub dynamo, you have a permanent power source and never have to worry about charging.
  4. For urban commuting 30-50 lux is plenty, for dark country paths 80-100 lux is more appropriate.
  5. Choose a rear light with stand light function (stays lit a few minutes after stopping) for added visibility at traffic lights.
