Sigma Buster 1100
Sigma · MTB-koplamp· €74.95
Our verdict
At 75 euros the Sigma Buster 1100 is one of the best lumens-per-euro deals for Dutch MTB riders. Treat it as a supplement — not a replacement — for an StVZO-approved road light.
Detailed review
The Sigma Buster 1100 is a different animal to the Sigma Aura 80 in our city line: this is an offroad light, purely for MTB riders who hit the Veluwe, Utrechtse Heuvelrug or Amerongse Berg after work as soon as it gets dark. 1100 lumens is astronomical next to the 70 lux Busch & Müller IQ-X or the 800-lumen CatEye Volt 800 in our list — the difference between 'I see the path' and 'I see every patch of moss on a log 40 metres away'. That power has a downside: no StVZO. The beam is a broad flood without sharp cut-off, which will blind every oncoming rider on a narrow Dutch bike path.
Dutch law requires a white front light; 'adequate' is loosely interpreted, but running a 1100-lumen MTB light as your sole front light on public roads draws angry gestures and — at a police check — a warning or €55 fine for dazzling. The solution MTBers use: pair the Buster on your helmet with an StVZO light on your bar (e.g. the Sigma Aura 80). In the forest the Buster goes on; on the bike path home you switch it off. Helmet mounting matters: because your head turns with the corner, the beam lights the inside of every bend — critical on technical singletrack.
Runtime at 1100 lumens is a lean 1.5 hours, but drop to 500 lumens (still plenty) and you get 3.5 hours — more than enough for a feierabend loop during the 7-8 hours of daylight December grants you. USB-C charging uses a fast-charge protocol: empty to full in 2.5 hours. The aluminium heatsink prevents the throttling you get on the cheaper NiteRider Lumina in our list after 20 minutes on high.
Who is this for?
- MTB riders doing winter singletrack after work in the Veluwe or Utrechtse Heuvelrug
- Bikepackers needing light for off-grid navigation
- Riders pairing it as a helmet light alongside an StVZO bar light
What to watch out for
- Do NOT use as sole front light on public bike paths — it dazzles oncoming riders
- Only 1.5 hours runtime on full 1100 lumens — plan short blocks or settle for 500
