Vaude Aqua Back
Vaude · Achtertas· €119.95
Our verdict
The Vaude Aqua Back is the best pick for waterproof quality without paying the Ortlieb premium, especially if sustainability matters. Practically equivalent in performance, 15 euros cheaper and with a better environmental story.
Detailed review
The Vaude Aqua Back is the sustainable answer to Ortlieb's dominance and it works remarkably well. Vaude manufactures these bags at their own German factory, carbon-neutral, from PVC-free PU-coated polyester — a meaningful detail for anyone who'd rather not have PVC on the bike. The Green Shape certification means the whole supply chain is audited for environmental and labour standards, and in practice you'll notice zero compromise on quality: the welded seams and roll closure are every bit as waterproof as an Ortlieb, and after years of Dutch rain you won't find a leak.
At 24 litres per bag the Aqua Back actually holds a bit more than the Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic (20 L), meaning there's room for a 15-inch laptop, a change of clothes, lunch and still space for a helmet or gym kit. The QMR 2.0 mount is Vaude's answer to QL2.1: you click the bag onto the rack with a reassuring 'clack' and the lower hook stops it bouncing off over cobbles or tram tracks. It feels slightly more plastic in the hand than the Ortlieb mechanism, but functionally there's no real difference — neither will fail you over 10 years of use.
For Dutch year-round cyclists torn between Vaude and Ortlieb it comes down to priorities: pick Vaude if sustainability and a slightly lower price (about 15 euros cheaper) matter, pick Ortlieb for the absolute premium feel and the largest repair ecosystem. Compared to the Brooks Brick Lane or Basil City Shopper the Aqua Back is playing a completely different sport — 120 euros looks steep until you realise you're buying the only pannier you'll ever need for commuting, shopping and summer holidays along the IJssel.
