Our verdict

Fine budget pick for occasional shopping, but don't count on dry contents in Dutch rain. Spend 10 euros more on the AGU Clean if you want genuine waterproofing.

Detailed review

The Basil City Shopper is exactly what it claims to be: a simple, affordable shopping bag that hangs on your rack and works fine for short runs to the supermarket. For 40 euros you get a double-walled polyester bag that holds itself open — a small but genuinely useful detail when you're at the bike with an armful of groceries. Its 16 litres fit roughly one full supermarket bag, which covers typical Dutch daily shopping: bread, milk, vegetables, a pack of pasta. But let's be honest about where it falls short: waterproofing.

Basil calls it 'water-repellent', which in the Netherlands means practically nothing — in a proper downpour your groceries are wet within 20 minutes. If you only cycle on dry summer evenings that's fine, but anyone who rides year-round (which in the Netherlands is everyone) will find a 'water-repellent' bag structurally inadequate. Compare that to the AGU Clean, which for 10 euros more offers welded seams and a roll closure. The mount is simple metal hooks that clamp over the rack — functional but a world away from the Quick-Lock convenience of Ortlieb or Vaude.

On bumps or sharp corners the bag can wobble, and taking it off when you arrive is a two-handed job. For occasional shoppers who rarely ride in the rain the City Shopper makes sense — it's cheaper than getting the wrong thing from a fancier brand. But commuters, tourers and daily work riders should step up to AGU, Vaude or Ortlieb. The City Shopper is cheap, and you feel exactly where the savings come from.
