Our verdict

The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini is mechanically the safest U-lock a consumer can buy. Unbeatable for expensive bikes in high-risk areas, but without ART certification it is not a replacement for an insurance-approved lock on an e-bike.

Detailed review

The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini is not a lock you pick because it is practical — you pick it because you need to secure something that professional theft rings, often operating out of Eastern Europe around the big Dutch train stations, actively target. Think Riese & Müller speed pedelec, four-thousand-euro cargo e-bike or a Dura-Ace road bike. The 18 mm shackle is thicker than what virtually any hand-operated bolt cutter can chew through; the point where tools are faster than a quick grab-and-run is gone here. Even with an angle grinder it takes meaningfully longer than a 13 mm shackle, and every extra second in public counts against the thief. Mechanically Kryptonite does what you expect at this price. The shackle is parabolic, which frustrates saw attacks, and both legs deadbolt via dual disc cylinders — so even after one cut the lock stays closed. The front disc cylinder is protected against drill and pick attempts and has a dust cover that flips open smoothly. The keys are milled nickel steel and turn with far more authority than the thinner set that comes with the cheaper Evolution Mini-7. Three years parked outside at an NS bike rack and owners report almost zero mechanical complaints — which is the minimum you should demand from a lock at this grade.

The bigger story in the Netherlands is certification. The Fahgettaboudit carries Sold Secure Diamond, roughly equivalent to ART-3 internationally, but no ART sticker. For insurers like Univé, ENRA and Centraal Beheer that is often a dealbreaker: you can own the mechanically safest lock in the world and still be refused a payout because the paperwork does not match. If you want to insure an e-bike worth more than 3,000 euros, an ART-2 or ART-3 lock like the ABUS Granit X-Plus 540 or ABUS Bordo 6000 is strictly speaking the correct choice, even though they are mechanically weaker. For an expensive bike you do not insure, or as a second lock alongside an ART-certified one, the Fahgettaboudit is one of the safest purchases on the market.

Honest limits: 4.2 kg is heavy. You do not carry this in a backpack — this lock lives by the front door, in a cargo-bike pannier, or permanently chained to an office bike rack. Internal clearance is small (8.3 by 15.3 cm), so fat Amsterdam lamp posts and trees often do not fit — always hunt for a slim, anchored post or an official NS rack. And because Kryptonite uses different key systems per region, replacement sets via the Key Safe Program can take several days to arrive if you lose your keys.

  • Double-deadbolt locking with anti-drill and anti-pull disc cylinder
  • Made for high-risk spots: stations, Amsterdam centre, Utrecht Centraal

Cons
