The Hague has a relatively high e-bike ownership among over-60s in neighbourhoods like Benoordenhout, Statenkwartier and Wassenaar (edge municipality), and since 2020 the number of e-bike accidents in this demographic has risen 35%. This makes bike helmets more popular in The Hague than in other Randstad cities — where helmets are often seen as unnecessary, here you spot them on older e-bike riders, speedpedelec commuters (mandatory!) and international-school children on Scheveningseweg and in Statenkwartier. The speedpedelec helmet is legally required and must be NTA-8776 certified (Abus Pedelec 2.0, Lazer Anverz). For ordinary e-bikes a standard EN-1078 helmet is enough.
