Lumos Ultra
Lumos · Stadshelm met verlichting· €149.95
Our verdict
The most complete helmet for Dutch commuters — MIPS, 360-degree lighting and brake lights in a single package. The premium is steep but justified if you ride in the dark every day.
Detailed review
The Lumos Ultra is the helmet that answers Dutch cycling reality most directly: long commutes in the dark, damp autumn evenings and busy traffic where visibility is everything. Where most helmets need a separate rear light clipped on, the Ultra integrates a full 360-degree LED array — white at the front, red at the rear — plus automatic brake lights driven by an accelerometer that detects when you slow down. Paired with an Apple Watch or Garmin, you can even trigger turn signals from your wrist, which is gimmicky on paper but genuinely handy at a Dutch roundabout. On the protection side, the Ultra is seriously equipped: a MIPS liner, CE EN 1078 and CPSC certification, and a dual-density EPS shell.
That puts it well above simpler city helmets like the ABUS Urban-I 3.0 or the Thousand Heritage 2.0. Note that the standard Ultra is not NTA 8776 certified — the Dutch legal standard for speed pedelecs since 2017. Lumos sells a separate MIPS Ultra specifically for that market, so double-check which version you're buying. The fit sits taller and rounder than typical road helmets, which suits city riders with broader head shapes.
At 385 g in size M, it's noticeably heavier than the POC Omne Air SPIN, and you'll feel it after an hour in the rain. Six hours of battery is enough for a full commuting week, and the USB-C port is a welcome upgrade from the fragile micro-USB of the previous generation. For e-bike commuters who want maximum visibility without yet another light to charge, this is currently the most complete helmet on the market.

- City cyclists who want maximum visibility and MIPS in a single product

What to watch out for
