Gazelle Makki Load
Gazelle · Compacte e-bakfiets· €2999.00
Our verdict
The Gazelle Makki Load is the smart middle ground: more compact, nimbler and more trustworthy than a Babboe, cheaper and more manageable than an Urban Arrow Family. For smaller families in the city it is the best balance of price and quality in this comparison.
Detailed review
Gazelle is the oldest and best-known Dutch bike brand — and until relatively recently it had no serious contender in the cargo segment. The Makki Load is Gazelle's answer to dealers and customers who wanted an Urban Arrow but balked at its length and price. It is deliberately a more compact e-cargo: shorter wheelbase than a Family, a smaller but still practical wooden box, and the Bosch Active Line Plus mid-drive instead of the heavier CX. For families with one or two kids riding five rather than fifteen kilometres per trip, for city grocery runs and for buyers who value the Gazelle service network, the Makki Load is a smart alternative that makes cargo-bike life more accessible without the reputation risk of Babboe or the full price tag of Urban Arrow.
Riding the Makki Load feels more direct and lighter than an Urban Arrow Family: the shorter wheelbase means quicker steering responses and more natural behaviour in tight city situations. The Active Line Plus motor (50 Nm) is noticeably calmer than the 85 Nm Bosch CX in the Family, which in daily use is an advantage — less shoving assist, smoother pick-up, more efficient energy use — but it becomes a disadvantage when you pull away fully loaded into a stiff cross-wind or have to gun it up a canal bridge. The box holds around 75 kg, enough for one to two kids plus groceries, but with three kids or a full picnic load you are at the ceiling. It rides comfortably empty and steers precisely on the narrow cycle paths along Utrecht's canals. Compared to a Babboe Curve-E the Makki wins on nimbleness, ride comfort and brand trust; against the Curve-E it loses on raw cargo volume.
The biggest limitation is that smaller box. With three kids or consistent heavy groceries plus children you will miss the extra centimetres of an Urban Arrow Family. And the Active Line Plus, though well chosen for this bike, does not have the bat-out-of-hell pick-up the Performance CX delivers when the box is full. Against a non-electric Babboe City the Makki is one and a half times the price, but you get a much better bike, a safe brand with no recall shadow, and pedal assist that squares the Dutch commuting reality for you. For families with one or two kids who value compactness, this is the best combination of price, quality and ease in this list. Larger families or anyone chasing maximum cargo volume are still better off with the Urban Arrow Family.
