Our verdict

The Batavus Finez E-go Power is the low-maintenance pick for flat-country Dutch commuters who want a quiet, clean bike with no fuss. For sharper performance or hilly terrain the Gazelle Chamonix or Kalkhoff Endeavour are better choices, but for pure city commuting this Batavus is hard to beat.

Detailed review

The Batavus Finez E-go Power is built for the most quintessentially Dutch riding profile there is: flat terrain, frequent rain, lots of start-stops and the same commute day in, day out. Batavus has an iconic place in Dutch cycling history, and this Finez pairs that heritage with modern Bosch electronics. The typical buyer rides 5 to 12 km per day, parks outside at the station or office, and simply does not want an oily hand after every rain shower. The fully enclosed chaincase and hub gear mean you can step on it in a suit or coat without trouser clips or grease marks.

The Bosch Active Line Plus motor delivers 50 Nm of torque and is deliberately tuned softer than the Performance Line on the Gazelle Chamonix T10 HMS — you feel support from the first pedal stroke, but without the sporty push you get in Turbo on the Kalkhoff Endeavour 5.B Move+. In Eco you see 80 to 110 km from the 500 Wh battery, which covers a full week of commuting on one charge. The Shimano Nexus 7-speed hub shifts silently and can also change gear while stopped — handy at traffic lights when you suddenly want a lower gear. Compared to the derailleur on the Cube Touring Hybrid ONE you lose gear range but gain ease of use. The roller brakes work fine in the city, but on a long descent in Limburg the difference with hydraulic disc brakes is clear.

Honest caveats: the combination of Active Line Plus and roller brakes makes the Finez unsuitable for riders who tackle hills often or tow a trailer — in that case, look at the Kalkhoff or the Giant Explore E+ 2. At 26.5 kg the weight is in line with competitors, but the Nexus hub concentrates mass in the rear wheel, making it extra awkward to lift backwards. The lighting is functional but not particularly bright. For anyone seeking a calm, low-maintenance commuter in flat Netherlands, the Finez is an excellent buy; more ambitious riders should look elsewhere.
