Our verdict

The Sparta d-Burst M8Tb is a solid mid-field pick for riders who want a more modern style with hydraulic disc brakes and an 8-speed Nexus hub. Not the strongest motor in the test, but more than enough for flat Netherlands at a reasonable price.

Detailed review

The Sparta d-Burst M8Tb aims at a specific niche: riders who want a sportier, more modern look than the classic Omafiets-derived designs from Gazelle or Batavus, without going fully sporty like the Giant Explore E+ 2 or Cube Touring Hybrid ONE. Sparta is an old Dutch brand headquartered in Apeldoorn with a solid national dealer network. The typical buyer is younger or more sporty, rides 8 to 15 km daily through the city, and values that the bike does not look like an 'old-fashioned Dutch bike'. The frame lines are cleaner, the head tube slightly longer, and the whole thing looks more modern on the street.

Under the hood sits the same Bosch Active Line Plus as in the Batavus Finez E-go Power — whisper-quiet, natural in feel, but only 50 Nm of torque. On flat routes that is fine, but as soon as you ride a headwind on the Afsluitdijk or climb a bridge, you clearly feel the difference with the 65 Nm Performance Line on the Gazelle Chamonix T10 HMS. The Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub gives slightly more range than a 7-speed, which subtly helps on long flat stretches. Range is 70 to 100 km from the 500 Wh battery. The hydraulic disc brakes are a clear plus over the roller brakes on the Batavus Finez — you stop shorter in wet conditions and need less maintenance than cables on the Cortina E-Octa.

Honest caveats: combining a sporty frame with a relatively weak motor is not logical for everyone. If you want a sporty look and a powerful motor, the Giant Explore E+ 2 or Kalkhoff Endeavour 5.B Move+ are better fits. If you mainly want to minimise maintenance, the Batavus Finez is the better pick thanks to its enclosed chaincase. Sparta also has somewhat weaker second-hand resale than Gazelle or Batavus — expect 10-15% extra depreciation after 4 years. For the right buyer — someone who wants a modern look, rides on the flat, and values hydraulic disc brakes — the d-Burst M8Tb is a decent mid-field pick in this test.
