HITWAY BK16
HITWAY · Vouwbare stads-e-bike· €599.00
Our verdict
The HITWAY BK16 proves that a folding e-bike at €599 is technically possible. Accept limits in lifespan, service and components — or spend €200 more on the ENGWE L20 SE for clearly better build quality.
Detailed review
The HITWAY BK16 is the bottom rung of the budget e-bike market: €599 for a real folding electric bike is unheard of by Dutch standards. At this price it's unreasonable to expect premium components, but the BK16 delivers what the ticket promises: a working motor, a usable battery, hydraulic-style (actually mechanical) brakes and a folding mechanism that lets it fit in a Peugeot 208 boot. For someone who cycles to an allotment once a week or brings a bike on a camping holiday, it's a rational choice where you don't invest more than it's worth. Don't compare this to a €2,999 Gazelle Chamonix — you're in a different universe.
In use, the BK16 feels exactly like what it is. The 250W rear hub motor with cadence sensor kicks in around 10 km/h and takes the edge off pedalling — not sporty, but functional. The 504 Wh battery delivers 45-55 km of real-world range, enough for two or three local trips before you need to charge. The 26-inch wheels roll better on asphalt than 20-inch variants, though the frame material is clearly heavier than on pricier folders. Mechanical disc brakes are adequate in the dry; in the rain you feel that budget pads don't do miracles. At 27-28 kg it's a hefty lift when folded — this is not a bike you carry up a storey, but it will squeeze into an elevator.
Honest warnings: the BK16 lives right on the 'works' / 'broken' boundary. The 1,200+ Amazon reviews skew positive, but you also see consistent complaints about LCD failures, leaking battery cells after 18 months, and HITWAY service sometimes taking weeks to ship a part. For a €599 bike these risks are expected — no ART certification means your insurer won't cover it, and spare parts are rare outside HITWAY itself. Pick this bike as a hobby toy, for holiday use or as a cheap first encounter with e-biking — not as your primary commute for the next five years.
