Bike Bells

Mandatory in the Netherlands.

5 products

Did you know that a bike bell is legally required in the Netherlands? The Vehicle Regulations require every bike to have a 'clearly audible' bell or horn. In practice enforcement is rare, but at a traffic check it can earn you a fine. A bell is also simply practical: on busy Dutch routes along the canals, wide two-way paths and between slow-walking pedestrians a friendly tinkle beats shouting or braking.

The Australian Knog Oi has become popular recently thanks to its very minimalist design (almost invisible on the bar) and remarkably clear tone. Other strong brands include Trelock, Widek (Dutch classic), Crane and Spurcycle (American premium bells for 45-65 euros). Classic copper 'ding-ding' bells from Widek are nostalgically lovely and cost just 8-15 euros.

Prices thus range from 5 euros (supermarket thing) to 65 euros (Spurcycle). When buying check the handlebar diameter (usually 22.2 mm on city bikes or 31.8 mm on sport bikes) and whether you want a bell with a classic thumb trigger or a rolling bell for continuous ringing.

Buying tips

  1. A bell is legally required in the Netherlands, fines of around 55 euros if you get stopped riding without one.
  2. Check your handlebar diameter: 22.2 mm is standard on city bikes, 31.8 mm on most road and MTBs. The wrong size will not fit or will rattle loose.
  3. Designer bells like the Knog Oi sound clear enough and are visually minimal, ideal on sporty bikes.
  4. Classic copper Widek bells have a characteristic warm tone and look right on old Dutch city bikes.
  5. Test before buying: some 'design' bells sound cute in the shop but are too weak to cut through busy street noise.
