Best Bike Racks 2026
Bike racks for your car.

Dutch drivers love tow-bar mounted bike racks: roughly 70 percent of racks sold in NL mount on the tow bar. That makes sense because Dutch cars frequently have tow bars, and these racks are easy to load (low to the ground), support heavy e-bikes (often up to 60 kg total) and still allow boot access via a tilting mechanism.
Thule, Yakima/Whispbar, Atera (German premium) and Uebler (German top tier) dominate this segment. The Thule VeloSpace XT and Atera Strada are the most chosen e-bike racks. Roof racks (Thule, Yakima) are popular for tall cars where boot access via tow bar is awkward, but beware: e-bikes are too heavy and too tall for roof mounting (think parking garages). Rear-trunk straps racks are the cheapest (from 100 euros) but scratch paint, are unsuitable for e-bikes and completely block the boot.
Prices range from 100 euros for a basic trunk rack to 700 euros for a Thule Epos for 3 bikes including lights. Check your tow bar's tongue weight capacity (usually 50 or 75 kg) and lock features: a good rack has locks for both the rack on the tow bar and the bikes on the rack.

Buying tips
- Got an e-bike? Go for a tow-bar rack, roof racks are too high and not rated for 25 kg e-bikes.
- Check your tow bar's nose weight rating before buying, usually 50, 75 or 100 kg, exceeding it is illegal and dangerous.
- Pick a rack with a tilt mechanism so you can still open the boot with bikes loaded, really useful on holiday.
- Locks on both the rack-to-tow-bar and bikes-to-rack are essential, an unlocked rack is an invitation for thieves at motorway services.
- Check the license plate holder supports the Dutch format, some cheap racks only fit German plates and are then not legal in NL.
