Vaude Luminum Vest
Vaude · Reflectievest· €60.00
Our verdict
The Vaude Luminum Vest is a focused safety layer for dark commuting: certified visible, windproof, compact. Not a rain jacket, but a lifesaver at dusk.
Detailed review
The Vaude Luminum Vest isn't a rain jacket but a targeted answer to a specific Dutch problem: you're riding home at 17:30 in November, it's dark, the road is wet, and drivers consistently spot cyclists too late. The EN 20471 class 2 certification isn't marketing fluff: it means the vest meets the same visibility standard as road workers and ambulance staff. In a car's high beams the wearer is visible up to 300 metres — in ordinary dark clothing it's 30 metres. The build is smart: windproof front panel against chill at 0-10°C, breathable back so you don't overheat on a hill, and 3M Scotchlite bands wrapping the torso all the way around — not just the front, as on cheap alternatives. At 165 grams and folding small, the vest can live in your office backpack without taking space. For commuters who leave in the dark and return in the dark, this is a staple.
Compared with a Proviz Reflect360, Vaude offers more breathability but less reflection — Proviz is fully reflective, Vaude is fluoro with bands. Against a simple €15 Wowow hi-vis vest you pay five times more but gain wind-proofing, better fit and more durable materials. The Castelli Perfetto gilet is sportier and more windproof for road riders but lacks the EN 20471 certification. For mountain bikers this vest is unnecessary — they ride trails in daylight, not traffic.
Honest limits: the DWR coating wears off after 20-30 washes, after which the vest soaks up water instead of repelling it — not dramatic for a visibility layer, but worth knowing. Fluoro yellow is functional, not stylish; anyone cycling to a formal workplace will peel the vest off on arrival. Below -3°C it's too light as a top layer — pair with fleece. For the Dutch commuter cycling at autumn dusk on a city bike or e-bike, this is a sensible buy — visibility is safety, not luxury.
Who is this for?
- Commuters riding at dusk or in the dark
- Riders whose jackets lack built-in reflectivity
- Parents doing early-morning school runs
What to watch out for
- DWR fades — the vest turns absorbent after many washes
- Fluoro yellow looks like workwear — not for taste-sensitive workplaces
