Dutch cyclists are traditionally self-reliant: a flat tyre or squeaking chain is usually something you fix yourself, and a basic toolbox belongs in every shed. For simple maintenance a decent Allen key set (2-10 mm), a Torx set (T25-T30), a chain whip and a solid high-pressure floor pump will take you far.
Beyond that a chain wear indicator, a bottom bracket tool, a brake caliper kit and a proper chain tool are the next step. Brands like Park Tool (American, but globally dominant in bike shops), Unior (Slovenian, professional grade) and Germany's BBB Cycling offer reliable tools. Chain lubes and cleaning products also belong here: consider WD-40 Dry Chain Lube for dry weather and a wet lube (like Muc-Off Wet) for the soggy Dutch winter.
For absolute beginners a BBB Toolbox BTL-14 or Park Tool Starter Kit is a great first buy at 60-100 euros. Never attack your bike with a pressure washer, that flushes grease out of bearings and your bottom bracket and makes the problem worse than the dirt.

Buying tips
- A basic Allen key set (2-10 mm) and Torx set cover 80 percent of all bike repairs, invest here first.
- A chain wear indicator costs 8 euros and saves you hundreds: replace your chain in time before the cassette and chainrings wear too.
- Always use bike-specific chain lube, not WD-40 multi-spray or motor oil, which either attract more dirt or wash off too quickly.
- Wet lube in winter, dry lube in summer, otherwise you either rinse your chain with every shower or end up with a gritty mess in a week.
- Never jet-wash your bike, warm water and a brush work just as well and do not blast grease from the bearings.
