Bike Mirrors

Better visibility in heavy traffic.

4 products

On a speed pedelec a rear-view mirror is legally mandatory, but on ordinary e-bikes and cargo bikes a bike mirror is also becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. The reason is simple: Dutch cycle paths are narrow, busy and shared by road cyclists, speed pedelecs doing 45 km/h, cargo bikes with children and mopeds. Being able to judge whether someone is overtaking without turning your head makes for safer and more relaxed riding, especially for parents with a cargo bike or commuters in traffic.

The three main types are handlebar mirrors (clamped onto the bar or stem), bar-end mirrors (inside the end of the handlebar, the sturdiest because there is no lever arm) and helmet mirrors. Helmet mirrors are particularly popular with speed pedelec riders because their NTA 8776 helmet still requires a mirror. Mind the handlebar diameter for clamp-on mirrors: 22.2 mm is standard on older city bikes, 31.8 mm on modern e-bikes and road bikes. Convex glass offers a wider field of view but makes distances harder to judge.

Prices start around 10 euros for a basic handlebar mirror and go up to 40 euros for premium models such as the Busch + Muller Cycle Star 903, with real glass and vibration damping for cobblestones. Polycarbonate mirrors are cheaper and practically unbreakable, whereas real glass gives a sharper image but can shatter in a crash.

Buying tips

  1. Check the handlebar diameter before buying: 22.2 mm is standard on older city bikes, whereas modern e-bikes and road bikes usually use 31.8 mm.
  2. A convex mirror gives up to 30 percent wider vision but makes judging distance harder, so practice on quiet cycle paths first.
  3. Bar-end mirrors are the sturdiest because they sit inside the bar end without a lever arm, ideal for speed pedelecs and road bikes on cobblestones.
  4. For speed pedelec riders with an NTA 8776 helmet, a helmet mirror such as the Busch + Muller Cycle Star eSpion is often the most practical solution.
  5. Glass delivers a sharper image and does not yellow in the sun, while polycarbonate (as on the Zefal Spin) is virtually unbreakable in a crash.
