Our verdict

The Selle Royal Respiro is the best entry-level comfort saddle for Dutch e-bike commuters and city riders under 50 euros. Not a saddle for serious tourers, but for a 10 km commute the instant comfort is unbeatable at this price.

Detailed review

The Selle Royal Respiro is built for a very specific Dutch user: the commuter doing 5 to 15 km a day on a city bike or e-bike, sitting upright, and unwilling to tolerate saddle soreness after a long workday. The philosophy is the opposite of a Brooks B17 — no break-in, no maintenance, maximum instant damping. The top consists of a layer of Royalgel (Selle Royal's proprietary silicone gel) on top of an elastomer layer, finished in water-resistant synthetic leather with a central ventilation groove that relieves perineal pressure. On a Gazelle Paris C7 or Stella Livorno e-bike the saddle feels like a sofa from the first pedal stroke — exactly what the target audience wants. In daily use the Respiro scores best on short to medium commutes. Over Amsterdam cobbles and speed bumps the gel behaves as a buffer that does not transmit the sharp vibrations you would feel on a firm sport saddle. The 245 mm width supports a genuinely upright posture where your sit bones land on the wide rear, as intended. For women there is a Respiro Moderate Woman variant with a slightly wider 260 mm platform and a shorter nose — more important than many brands suggest, because average female sit-bone spacing is 10 to 15 mm wider than male. The saddle has steel rails and fits 99% of European seatposts.

Compared with rivals it sits somewhere in the middle of the comfort-saddle market. The Ergon SM Sport — also in this list — is ergonomically more refined and better for sporty riding, but costs 10 euros more and is narrower. The Brooks Cambium C17 offers longevity the Respiro never reaches, but lacks gel's instant damping. The SQlab 612 Ergowave has a more sophisticated step-in shape for rides over 30 km, but costs three times as much. The Specialized Body Geometry Comfort is a direct rival with similar gel technology and price; preference is a matter of anatomy and availability at local Stella or Halfords shops. For anyone planning a cycling holiday through Drenthe with 60+ km days, the saddle becomes too soft by day three — a firmer alternative like the B17 or Cambium is better.

Honest about the limits: gel is not eternal. After roughly 8,000 km of heavy use — call it two to three years for a daily commuter — the gel compresses and the saddle loses its character. That is not a defect but a material property. Second point: above 25 km/h or rides longer than an hour the wide shape starts chafing your thighs, especially in sports clothing. This is explicitly not a road or trekking saddle. Third point: the synthetic leather is water-resistant but not waterproof — do not leave it in the rain for days. For a 10 km commute on an e-bike, however, the Respiro is one of the most honest bargains under 50 euros.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Instant comfort from the first ride — no break-in required
  • Royalgel and elastomer damping absorbs Dutch cobblestones and speed bumps
  • Central cutout relieves perineal pressure in upright riding posture
  • Sharp 45 euro price — most accessible comfort saddle in its class

Cons

  • Gel compresses after 2-3 years of heavy use — plan to replace around 8,000 km
