Our verdict

The Koga F3 wins 88 to 85, and this is the classic "safe default" versus "premium-without-going-electric" comparison in the Dutch city bike market. The €300 gap (€999 vs €699) feels meaningful on non-electric bikes, but amortised over a 15-year service life that's €20 a year for lower maintenance and better wet-weather performance. Component-wise, the Koga is clearly a class above. The Gazelle Van Stael delivers what you expect from a classic omafiets: a 7-speed Shimano Nexus hub gear, hub dynamo, ART-2 frame lock, full chain case and skirt guard — the reliable standard every Dutch shop can service within 10 minutes. The Koga F3 adds key upgrades on top: an 8-speed Shimano Alfine hub gear (wider range, smoother shifting), hydraulic disc brakes, and a GATES Carbon Drive belt instead of a chain. The belt lasts 30,000 km against the chain's roughly 5,000 km, and disc brakes perform significantly better in the rain — relevant in a country with 200+ rain days a year. The Koga is also lighter and more finely finished.

For anyone who wants a reliable city bike that every mechanic in the Netherlands can work on immediately and for which spare parts are always in stock, the Gazelle Van Stael is exactly what it should be. For the cyclist who wants premium components without switching to electric — and who values a virtually maintenance-free belt drive and disc brakes that work when it's pouring on the dike — the Koga F3 is the better investment.

For most Dutch city cyclists we recommend the Gazelle Van Stael, unless you value low maintenance, wet-weather performance, and a 15+ year life without chain worries — in that case the Koga F3 is worth every cent of the €300 premium.

Ride quality winner

Koga F3

The Koga F3 wins thanks to its 8-speed Alfine hub, hydraulic disc brakes, and GATES belt drive (30,000 km lifespan) — a package that performs significantly better in Dutch rain and is virtually maintenance-free over the bike's lifetime.

Value winner

Gazelle Van Stael

The Gazelle Van Stael is €300 cheaper, carries the Dutch-standard hub dynamo, chain case, and ART-2 frame lock, and can be serviced by every bike shop in the Netherlands within 10 minutes — the safe and proven default for classic city cyclists.

Pros and cons

Koga F3

Pros

  • Shimano Alfine 8 hub with wider range than Nexus 7 or 3
  • Gates Carbon belt drive — maintenance-free, no oil, no rust
  • Hydraulic Shimano disc brakes for all-weather stopping power
  • Lighter aluminium frame (18 kg) than Gazelle Van Stael or Batavus Fuze

Cons

  • 999 euros is steep — almost double a Cortina U4 Transport
  • Belt drive requires a specialist dealer for replacement

Gazelle Van Stael

Pros

  • Shimano Nexus 7-speed hub — low maintenance and reliable for years
  • Hub dynamo with B&M headlight so you are never without lighting
  • Fully enclosed chain case keeps rain and trouser legs out of the drive
  • Gazelle's 130+ years of experience translate into top finishing and strong resale value

Cons

  • At 22 kg it is on the heavy side — carrying it up to a first-floor flat is no fun
  • Costs almost 150 euros more than the Batavus Fuze for similar baseline equipment
