Tire Repair
Patch kits and inner tubes.

A flat tyre is the most common bike repair and every Dutch cyclist experiences it sooner or later. Most flats are small punctures (glass, nail, thorn) that can be patched with a 5-euro repair kit. A proper patch kit contains sandpaper, rubber cement, patches of various sizes and tyre levers.
Brands like Rema Tip Top (German, the undisputed standard among mechanics), Park Tool and Tubolito all make reliable kits. A practical on-the-road kit consists of a few tyre levers, a spare tube (faster than patching in the field), a patch kit as backup and a mini-pump or CO2 inflator. For those who ride a lot it pays to invest in puncture-resistant tyres: Continental GatorSkin, Schwalbe Marathon Plus and Schwalbe Marathon GreenGuard are the most popular choices in the Netherlands and cut flats by 60-90 percent versus regular tyres.
They are a bit heavier and feel slightly stiffer, but for commuting they are well worth 50-70 euros per tyre. For MTB and gravel tubeless is gaining popularity with sealant that automatically seals small cuts, but it is not a quick-and-dirty setup.

Buying tips
- A solid Rema Tip Top patch kit costs 5-8 euros and solves 90 percent of flats, buy one for home and one for the saddlebag.
- Always carry a spare tube on longer rides, in practice you would rather patch at home than in the rain.
- Invest in puncture-resistant tyres (Schwalbe Marathon Plus or Continental GatorSkin) if you ride a lot, the price premium pays for itself quickly.
- Do not use self-adhesive 'quick patches' on tubes you want to keep long term, only classic vulcanising patches really last.
- A CO2 inflator is faster than a mini-pump but runs out, combine them or carry a mini-pump on multi-day tours.
