Detailed review
The Rema Tip Top TT02 is the archetype of what a decent patch kit should be and the benchmark every competitor is measured against. The German family company from Poing has been making these patches since 1923 and the formula has not essentially changed: a thin layer of vulcanised rubber with an orange edge, a tube of natural-rubber solution and a strip of buffer abrasive. What makes it so beloved by Dutch cyclists is the honesty: for eight euros you get a repair as strong as the tube itself, provided you have the five minutes of patience the process requires. Field reliability is where the TT02 has earned its reputation. Patch a puncture in a Schwalbe Marathon Plus on the dyke along the river Waal near Nijmegen and the odds are that patch will still be there in five years — after hundreds of kilometres of rain and summers baking on 60°C tarmac. Cold vulcanisation creates a genuine chemical bond between patch and tube, unlike self-adhesive patches that start curling within months. Dutch tourers on the national LF routes swear by them: thorn on the Maasroute? Tube out, buff, solution, wait five minutes, press, reinflate. Good for another thousand kilometres.
Compared to self-adhesive alternatives like the Park Tool GP-2 or the Lezyne Smart Kit, the TT02 is cheaper but slower. The GP-2 sticks in 30 seconds, ideal if you are stranded late afternoon on a gravelly route between Arnhem and Nijmegen with dusk closing in. The Rema demands a spot out of the wind and some patience — but the repair is permanent. Zefal Repair offers a middle ground with slightly bigger patches and a cheaper tin, though its rubber solution dries out noticeably faster. For a home stash and for tourers who do several repairs a year, the Rema remains the most economical choice per successful repair.
Honest about the weak spots: the solution tube is the Achilles heel. Leave the cap off for a single night and the whole tube hardens — you now have six patches and no glue. Always buy a spare tube (about 2 euros at a decent bike shop) and replace the solution every two years as preventive maintenance. Also tricky: glass shards from Amsterdam canal streets sometimes leave a long narrow slit that even the largest F3 patch cannot fully cover. For those cases you need a new inner tube, full stop. The TT02 is not a miracle cure, but for standard thorns and sharp gravel there is still nothing better after a century of development.
Who is this for?
- Long-distance tourers on LF routes doing several repairs per season
- Home mechanics who want a stash tin in the workshop
- Commuters with tubeless tyres who want a reliable backup for emergencies
What to watch out for
- Solution tube dries out quickly if the cap is not fully sealed — check yearly
- Five-minute drying time is impractical in the rain without shelter

- Rubber solution stays usable for three to four years when stored correctly
Cons
- Requires five minutes of drying time — not a quick fix on the roadside
- The solution tube dries out entirely once the cap is left off
