Between 2024 and 2026 the fatbike has gone from a niche phenomenon to an omnipresent sight on Dutch streets. Where five years ago you might have spotted a single balloon-tyred machine on Zandvoort beach, industry body RAI Vereniging now estimates more than 200,000 electric fatbikes are in circulation, mostly ridden by teenagers, food couriers and younger commuters. Brands such as Ouxi, Phatfour, Knaap, Fatbike Lover and Lunar have established themselves rapidly, with prices ranging from 1,200 euros for grey-market imports to 3,500 euros for CE-marked models sold through authorised importers. The legal framework is clear but contentious: in the Netherlands an electric fatbike may deliver a maximum of 250 watts of continuous power, assistance must cut off at 25 km/h, and a throttle that works without pedalling is forbidden — you always have to pedal along. In practice these rules are breached on a massive scale. The infamous "opvoer" or unlock mode is the industry's biggest headache: many models contain hidden menu sequences or companion-app toggles that disable the speed limiter, after which the bike can reach 35, 45 or even 50 km/h. The moment that happens the fatbike legally becomes a moped, requiring a licence plate, helmet, insurance and driving licence.

Dutch police have responded by acquiring portable roller benches that let officers measure actual top speed on the spot. Offenders face substantial fines and, increasingly, confiscation of the bike. Insurers have grown wary: Univé, Unigarant and ANWB now routinely refuse cover for certain fatbike brands, and where cover is available it comes with high deductibles and stringent lock requirements.

The user groups are sharply defined. Teenagers aged 14 to 17 treat the fatbike as a tougher successor to the electric scooter. Couriers for Thuisbezorgd, Uber Eats, Flink and Gorillas value the combination of range, speed and carrying capacity. Commuters in the Randstad cover an average of 15 to 25 kilometres a day. At 28 to 35 kilograms, however, a fatbike is effectively impossible to carry up an apartment stairwell — the urban reality in Amsterdam-Zuidoost and Rotterdam-Zuid is that many owners are forced to park outside, with all the theft risks that entails. The distinction between grey import and CE-marked models is therefore crucial: only the latter comes with proper warranty, type approval and insurability built in.

For a fatbike, heavy-duty locks are not a luxury but a necessity: ART-3 is the absolute minimum, and in practice many owners run two locks at once — for instance an ABUS Granit XPlus 540 U-lock combined with a heavy chain such as the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit. Good lighting matters more on a fatbike than on a regular bike: the extra weight means longer braking distances and a greater need to be seen. A helmet is strongly recommended even on the legal 25 km/h version, and on speed-pedelec fatbikes that reach 45 km/h it is a legal requirement alongside a licence plate and insurance. Finally: invest in a decent tyre pressure gauge, because the right pressure (around 1 to 1.5 bar) is the difference between rolling smoothly and ploughing tiredly.
