Stromer ST3
Stromer · Premium speed pedelec· €6990.00
Our verdict
The Stromer ST3 is the king of single-battery speed pedelecs: huge range, luxury finish and serious connectivity. Buy it if you genuinely commute 30+ km one way and the legal obligations are no obstacle; for shorter city rides a regular e-bike remains the smarter call.
Detailed review
A speed pedelec in the Netherlands is never a casual choice. From the moment the Stromer ST3 rolls onto your driveway you are dealing with a moped under EU regulation L1e-B: mandatory license plate, mandatory NTA 8776 helmet (a normal cycling helmet is not legal), mandatory third-party (WA) insurance, and an AM or B driver's license as a minimum. That narrows the audience to a surprisingly affluent commuter cohort: tech executives doing a daily Amsterdam-Utrecht run, specialists at regional hospitals covering rural rounds, managers travelling from Haarlem to Schiphol-Oost. For them the ST3 often replaces a second car. Compared with the Gazelle Marathon S11 — also a real commuter tool but around €2,000 cheaper — Stromer targets the buyer willing to pay a premium for connectivity, finish and range. This is not a bike for a quick grocery run; every ride starts with helmet on, plate visible, policy active.
In performance the ST3 shines on long rides. The 983 Wh pack is the biggest single-battery solution in this lineup and delivers a realistic 100 km at a sustained 45 km/h commute, climbing to 180 km in eco mode. That beats the Gazelle Marathon S11 with 500 Wh (realistically 55-75 km) and the QWIC RD11 Speed, but falls short of the Riese & Müller Supercharger2, whose dual-battery 1125 Wh setup hits 150-200 km — a meaningful difference if you ride 50 km each way four days a week without charging at the office. The Stromer hub motor is notably quiet and direct, holding 45 km/h without the sudden cut-off some mid-motors exhibit. Frame geometry and hydraulic suspension keep the body settled at high speed and the Schwalbe tires provide enough grip on slick Dutch bridges.
The hard reality sits in the bureaucracy and the road layout. With a license plate a Dutch speed pedelec is banned from most fietspaden: you are only allowed on paths signposted for bromfietsers or formally classified as bromfietspad. Inside the built-up area that usually means riding the main carriageway with car traffic — which in rush-hour Amsterdam or Utrecht is precisely the opposite of what you want. WA insurance runs €150-€250 per year, and an NTA 8776 helmet (e.g. ABUS Pedelec 2.0) another €150-€200. Maintenance on a €6,990 machine is not cheap either: belt drive parts, 4-piston brake pads and motor firmware updates all go through the dealer. Anyone commuting less than 20 km one-way, or staying inside city limits, should honestly ask whether a regular e-bike like the Gazelle Ultimate is not the smarter call. But for riders covering 30-50 km one way who genuinely need the time savings, the ST3 is the most complete package of these four — as long as the budget fits.
