Rotterdam was almost entirely rebuilt after the 1940 bombing, and the cycling infrastructure reflects that: wide, straight cycle paths, modern junctions and generous roundabouts, a genuine relief compared with Amsterdam's narrow canals. The Erasmusbrug is iconic but notorious for its wind tunnels, particularly when the wind picks up from the Maas. Westblaak and Coolsingel together form some of the broadest bike streets in the country.

Rotterdam Centraal was given a completely new underground bike facility during renovation, with over 5000 spaces. Kop van Zuid and the Wilhelminapier are reached via the Erasmusbrug, and the Maastunnel has a dedicated bike tube that stays open around the clock.

As a port city Rotterdam has a different cycling profile than Amsterdam or Utrecht: many commuters combine car and bike, and cycling's share of all trips stands at a comparatively modest 22 percent. Thieves are still active, especially around Rotterdam CS and Eendrachtsplein. Theft figures are lower than Amsterdam but remain well above the national average. An ART-2 lock is the bare minimum, and a tracker is recommended for pricier bikes.

Weather

Rotterdam takes a double hit: coastal rain off the North Sea plus wind-tunnel effects between the high-rises on Coolsingel and Kop van Zuid. On the Erasmusbrug in particular, the side wind can literally push cyclists off balance. Solid rain trousers and a windproof jacket are not a luxury here, and clip-on glasses guards or a helmet visor can genuinely help against the horizontal rain.

Parking

The new facility underneath Rotterdam CS ranks among the most modern in the country: automatic OV-chipkaart access and round-the-clock staffing. At Beursplein and Eendrachtsplein there are large open-air bike racks. Outside the centre, at Rotterdam Blaak and Alexander, spacious free parking areas are available. Note that abandoned bikes there are also periodically cleared.

Theft

Although the figures sit below Amsterdam, Rotterdam is by no means a safe cycling city. Organised thieves operate around CS, Blaak and Eendrachtsplein. Insurers typically apply a surcharge for 010 postcodes in Rotterdam. ART-2 is the minimum, ART-3 is strongly advised for e-bikes. In the Charlois and Feijenoord districts the figures run noticeably above average.
