Utrecht is the cycling city par excellence: 43 percent of all trips are made by bike, and since 2019 the world's largest bike parking has sat beneath Utrecht Centraal, with over 12,500 spaces on three levels. It is free for the first 24 hours, then 1.25 euros per day. With Hogeschool Utrecht and Utrecht University (De Uithof campus / Utrecht Science Park), the city is home to tens of thousands of students who commute daily between town and campus along the Weg tot de Wetenschap.

The historic centre around the Domtoren, the Oudegracht with its wharf cellars, and Neude square are largely car-light and designed around cyclists and pedestrians. The narrow street network demands real skill: crossing trams (the Uithoflijn) and buses on the Vredenburg viaduct create genuinely complex traffic situations.

Utrecht lies inland, which means colder winters than the coastal cities and regular morning fog drifting over the canals. Theft is a serious issue: student bikes are the most sought-after prey and disappear in large numbers around the campus and at Ledig Erf. A solid lock (at least ART-2) and proper lights are essential, and anyone riding a pricier bike is well advised to add a tracker and good panniers for the daily town-to-Uithof run.

Weather

As an inland city, Utrecht has colder winters than the coastal cities, with regular overnight frost and fog drifting above the Oudegracht. In summer it can run warmer thanks to the absence of sea wind. Slippery conditions on the wharf quaysides and bridges are a real risk in January and February, and solid winter tyres, or at the very least strong lights against the early dusk, are strongly recommended.

Parking

The Stationsstalling at Utrecht CS is world-famous for its sheer scale. There are also major parking facilities at Stadhuisbrug, near Neude, and on the Uithof campus. The city centre enforces a strict policy on abandoned bikes: after 28 days unused bikes are removed and taken to the AFAC depot. Paid parking (after 24 free hours) costs 1.25 euros per day.

Theft

Utrecht is a hotspot for student-bike theft. Around De Uithof, Ledig Erf and on Domplein thousands of bikes vanish every year. A relatively large share are opportunistic thefts against cable locks, which confirms again that ART-2 or higher is a must. For pricey e-bikes insurers often require a second lock and sometimes a GPS tracker.
