Our verdict

The Bafang 42V 3A is the pragmatic pick for DIY and retrofit e-bikes with a generic 36V battery. Affordable and functional, but exclusively for systems without smart data communication — never use it on branded packs like Bosch or Shimano.

Detailed review

The Bafang 42V 3A charger lives in a completely different universe from Bosch or Shimano. This is the charger you need if you ride a retrofit city bike with a Bafang BBS02 mid-drive, a Chinese hub-motor kit from AliExpress or a budget e-bike from a brand like Vogue, Saxxx or one of the Marktplaats DIY builders. It is a raw 42V 3A li-ion charger with a standard DC barrel plug (usually 5.5x2.1mm or XLR-3) and no smart data link to the battery. That makes it universally useful but less elegant. On charging time the 3A output hits spec: a 36V 10Ah (360 Wh) pack takes about 4 hours to full, a 13Ah (468 Wh) pack about 5 hours, and a thicker 17.5Ah (630 Wh) pack close to 7 hours. The final constant-voltage stage (above 41V) is slower, as on pricier chargers. Passive cooling runs through an aluminium backplate; under heavy summer use in a hot garage the housing can climb toward 55°C, which is within spec but feels warmer than a Bosch or Shimano unit.

Compared to genuine chargers the price advantage is big: 45 euros versus 89 for Bosch or 79 for Shimano. For anyone who has bolted a BBS02 onto an old Gazelle or Batavus (a popular retrofit in the Netherlands costing around 600-800 euros in parts), this is simply the default charger. Reliability sits at the 'works fine for 3 to 5 years' level — not the decade you would expect from Bosch. Competitors like the Luna Cycle Advanced Charger or a Canadian Grin Satiator offer smart features (custom profiles, adjustable end voltage) for 150+ euros, but for simple home charging that is overkill.

Honest: NEVER use this charger on a branded pack like a Bosch PowerPack, Shimano STEPS or Brose battery, even if the voltage looks right. Those packs rely on CAN-bus or UART communication with the charger, and a plain 42V 3A supply without a data line can damage the BMS or brick the battery. Also: always check the DC plug polarity (positive centre is Bafang standard, but some Chinese brands reverse it). And finally: a charger has no ART seal — it does not need one — but make sure you buy a CE-certified unit from a reputable importer, because grey-market imports without CE do not meet Dutch domestic electrical safety rules.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Works with nearly every 36V (42V charging) battery with a DC plug — BBS01/02/HD, Unit, Ansmann
  • Very affordable — roughly half the price of a genuine Bosch charger
  • Charges a 36V 13Ah (468 Wh) battery in about 5 hours
  • Compact and light enough (500 g) for occasional travel

Cons

  • Build quality is generic — no active cooling and a simple plastic housing
  • Not intended for Bosch, Shimano or Brose systems with data communication
