With more than 3 million e-bikes in the Netherlands, chargers are big business. Dutch e-bikes are overwhelmingly powered by Bosch (roughly 70 percent market share in the mid-drive segment), followed by Shimano STEPS, Yamaha, Brose, Bafang and a handful of smaller players.

Chargers are brand and system specific: a Bosch charger will not work on a Shimano battery and vice versa, since both the plug and the charging profile differ. Within a brand there are usually two speeds: a standard 4A charger (fills a 500 Wh battery in about 4 hours) and a 6A fast charger (around 2 hours for the same battery). Fast chargers are handy on longer tours in hotels, but charging exclusively on fast mode slightly shortens battery life.

Prices for original chargers range from 80 euros (Shimano STEPS 2A) to 250 euros (Bosch Fast Charger 6A). Third-party chargers from brands like OnePlus, AccuPlaza and Enerpower work fine in many cases and are 30-50 percent cheaper, but check BMS compatibility, otherwise you risk warranty issues and in the worst case fire. Prefer original chargers or reputable secondary brands with CE marking and clearly listed battery compatibility.

Buying tips

Always buy a charger exactly compatible with your motor and battery system — Bosch Active Line and Performance Line share chargers for example, but Shimano STEPS uses a completely different one.
A fast charger (6A) is handy on the road, but at home a standard charger (4A) extends battery life.
Look for CE marking and ideally Dutch certification, cheap uncertified chargers can be a fire hazard.
Do not routinely charge to 100 percent or below 10 percent, 20-80 percent is ideal for long battery life.
A second charger (one at home, one at work) saves a lot of hassle if you commute, especially given winter range losses.
