Our verdict

The Bosch Compact Charger 2A is the smartest second charger for Bosch Classic+ riders who travel often. Light, compact and genuine — buy it as a travel companion, not as a replacement for your 4A home base.

Detailed review

The Bosch Compact Charger 2A is the only official Bosch charger designed to travel with you. Where the 4A Standard and 6A Fast are heavy home bases, the Compact is a travel tool: 560 grams, 14 by 7 by 4 cm, and a detachable C7 mains cable. That cable sounds like a detail but is a serious advantage — leave the heavy cord at home and throw only the charger brick plus a shorter local cord in your pannier. For Dutch cycling holidays (Vechtdal route, Wadden route Texel-Lauwersoog, LF long-distance routes) or multi-day tours in Germany and Belgium, that is worth every euro. On charging performance the trade-off is obvious: at 2A it takes exactly double the time of a 4A. A 500 Wh PowerPack fills in about 9 hours, a 625 Wh PowerTube in close to 11 hours. In practice that is fine when you arrive at a B&B, hotel or holiday park in the evening and leave the bike on the wall all night. For daily home use it would feel painfully slow, but on the road 'from 20% to 100% overnight' is plenty — and you save meaningfully on weight and luggage volume. Noise from the fan is very low, comparable to the 4A, and the housing stays under 40°C thanks to the lower charge current.

Compared to the competition there is really no direct alternative. Shimano offers no travel charger in this compact segment, nor do Yamaha or Brose. Some cycling holidaymakers keep a second standard 4A permanently at their holiday home, but anyone changing location regularly (camper trips, B&B hopping) is better served by this 2A Compact. Aftermarket travel chargers on AliExpress exist but carry the same risk as a Bafang unit on a Bosch system: BMS damage from missing data communication — absolutely not worth it on an expensive PowerTube.

Honest: this charger shares the same compatibility limit as the other Bosch units here — it does not work with Bosch Smart System (2022+). If you own a recent Trekking+, Gazelle Ultimate C8+ or Riese & Müller with Smart System, this charger is out. The 2A speed is also borderline for anyone arriving at 6 pm and leaving at 7 am the next morning with a full 500 Wh or larger pack — just enough for a 13-hour night, but no margin if you roll in at 10% state of charge or lower. Plan with a buffer or start the day with at least 40% in the pack if you ride genuinely long stages.
