Our verdict
The Bosch Standard Charger 4A is the safest default pick for anyone with a Bosch Classic+ e-bike who needs a spare. Reliable, quiet and fully genuine — you pay for peace of mind and warranty, not for extra speed.
Detailed review
The Bosch Standard Charger 4A is the kind of accessory that only becomes noticeable when it breaks or goes missing. It is literally the charger that came with your Gazelle Ultimate, Batavus Finez, Koga E-Worldtraveller or QWIC Performance MD11 when you bought the bike. Bosch sells the exact same unit as a spare, which is useful when you want to leave the original at the office or at a holiday home so you do not have to stuff a heavy brick into your backpack every Friday afternoon. On charging performance it delivers exactly what you expect: a 500 Wh PowerPack from 0 to 100% in about 4.5 hours, a 625 Wh PowerTube in roughly 5.5 hours and the smaller 400 Wh in just over 3.5 hours. Bosch uses a two-stage protocol that slows the final 20% to protect the cells, so a quick top-up to 80% usually takes just 3 hours. Active fan cooling keeps the housing below 40°C even when charging in a warm bike shed in summer. In a typical Amsterdam or Rotterdam apartment the fan barely rises above the fridge hum.
The competitive position is clear. A Shimano STEPS EC-E8004 for an E8000 motor is comparable in quality but only fits Shimano batteries. A Yamaha PW-X charger sits in the same 4A bracket but is rare in the Dutch market, and a Brose charger from Specialized or Bulls costs more without charging any faster. If you own a pure Bosch bike — and in the Netherlands that covers more than 60% of mid-drive e-bikes — the original 4A is almost always the smartest choice over cheaper aftermarket units, which can play loose with protection circuits and damage the battery if a connector seats slightly off.
Honest note: not every Bosch generation is interchangeable. Active Line, Performance Line and Performance Line CX motors from 2014-2021 all work with this charger, but the newest Smart System batteries (from 2022 onwards) use a different connector and require the Bosch Smart System charger. Check the bottom of your battery or the sticker inside your display housing to confirm whether you have Classic+ or Smart System. For Classic+ this is still the standard; for Smart System you need to step up.
