Bike Baskets

Baskets and crates for groceries.

5 products

A bike basket is the most Dutch cycling accessory there is. Whether it's a classic wicker-look front basket on a Cortina, a Steco rear crate or a Basil KlickFix mount — almost every Dutch city bike has one, and you see them in action daily at Albert Heijn or Jumbo.

The front-versus-rear choice matters. A front basket (15-30 L) keeps groceries visible but makes steering twitchier in wind. A rear crate (25-45 L) is more stable and carries more but may block a child seat. The mounting system (MIK, KlickFix, bungees, head-tube mount) decides whether the basket releases quickly — handy if you bring it indoors to prevent theft.

Prices run from €15 for a Cortina-style wire basket to €50 for a Steco Transport Original. For shoppers carrying for 4+ people, a MIK-compatible rear crate like the Basil Cento WSL (€35) is the standard pick. For just a baguette and a coffee, a cheap Cortina Tokyo (€25) does the job.

Buying tips

  1. Check that your rack is MIK-marked — otherwise a MIK basket won't fit and you'll need bungees instead.
  2. For a front basket: 5 kg max on the bars — heavier and steering becomes unsafe in station-side wind.
  3. A rear crate often blocks the child seat — verify this before purchase if you use both.
  4. KlickFix adapters (Rixen & Kaul) fit 22-26 mm bars — universal for 95% of Dutch bikes.
  5. Buy a separate rain cover (€7) like the Basil Regenhoes Universal — without one your groceries get wet anyway.
