Fenders
Protection against spray.

In a country with 200+ rainy days a year fenders (mudguards) are not cosmetic but absolutely essential. Without them you get a mud stripe up your back after the first shower, wet feet, a dirty handlebar and an unhappy cyclist behind you. Practically every Dutch city bike and e-bike has them as standard, but on sports bikes, MTBs and gravel bikes you need to add them yourself.
The industry standard is unquestionably SKS Bluemels: sturdy fenders with stainless steel stays and a solid plastic body, available in many sizes and colours (including matte black, chrome, brown). Other solid picks are Hebie (German, on many premium bikes), Curana (Belgian, stylish designs) and for quick-mount SKS Raceblade or Crud Roadracer (for the narrowest rims only). When buying check the width (fender should be at least 8-10 mm wider than the tyre) and whether your bike has eyelets for the stays.
Without eyelets clamp-on mounting is possible but less stable. Prices range from 25 euros for basic SKS sets to 70 euros for premium PDW or VeloOrange aluminium models.

Buying tips
- Pick fenders at least 8-10 mm wider than your tyres, otherwise water still sprays around the sides.
- SKS Bluemels are the de-facto standard: affordable, durable, and available in almost any size and colour.
- Does your bike have eyelets? Installation is then a half-hour job. Without eyelets you need clamps and the job gets fiddly.
- For quick mounting on a road bike the SKS Raceblade Long or Crud Roadracer is the best clip-on solution, but only for tyres under 28 mm wide.
- A mud flap at the trailing edge of the front fender keeps your feet and shoes surprisingly much drier.
