Topeak DeFender M1/M2 Set
Topeak · MTB-spatbord· €25.00
Our verdict
The Topeak DeFender M1/M2 is the default pick for Dutch MTB riders who want spray protection without permanent mounting. Quick install, wide wheel compatibility and a fair price — exactly what trail commuters need.
Detailed review
The Topeak DeFender M1/M2 set is designed for a specific problem: mountain bikers and trail riders in the Netherlands who plough through winter mud on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the Veluwe or the Amsterdamse Bos trails do not want to return with a brown stripe across the helmet every ride. Full fenders rarely fit an MTB with a dropper post and suspension fork; clip-ons like the S-Board are too narrow for 2.4-inch tyres. The DeFender set fills this gap precisely. Protection is where this set convinces, albeit within clear limits. On wet forest paths after rain — a standard Dutch condition from October to April — the M1 keeps your face and handlebar largely clear of the mud spray your front wheel throws up. The M2 behind stops the signature sand streak up your back. Ride through deep puddles or proper mud and your calves and shoes still pick up plenty; this is not a trekking fender with full coverage. For a commuter covering 10 km of mixed paths to the office, the difference compared to an MTB without fenders is huge — no more mud splatter reaching your hair.
Compared to rivals the DeFender set holds up well. The Crud RoadRacer Mk3 is not built for MTBs and will not fit around fat tyres. The Blackburn Central is a sturdier install but lacks the quick-release, trail-friendly removability that matters on race days. Alternatives like the Mucky Nutz Face Fender offer less rear protection. For €25 you get a complete set that covers most MTB commuters, while still letting you strip it off in 30 seconds for summer XC races or technical downhill runs. The flexible plastic construction also means it absorbs hits and flexes instead of snapping when a branch catches it — a realistic scenario on Dutch forest trails.
Honest about the weaknesses: on pure tarmac commutes from station to office the M2 audibly rattles from its flex. The seat-tube mount does not work on every frame — aero seat tubes and extremely short seat towers (as on some enduro bikes) can be too tight. In proper mud sessions you have to pull the set off after the ride and rinse it, otherwise grit cakes in the clamp and scratches your paint. And for riders who mainly race dry summer trails the extra 240 grams is unnecessary weight. But for a typical Dutch MTB commuter or recreational trail rider this set strikes the right balance between protection, weight and flexibility.
