Our verdict
The SKS Bluemels is the safest all-round pick for trekking bikes, city bikes and e-bikes on 28-inch wheels. Full coverage, Secu-Clip safety release and a finish that survives Dutch winters — exactly what you want for daily rain commuting.
Detailed review
The SKS Bluemels has been the default recommendation for anyone on 28-inch wheels who takes fenders seriously for decades. In the Netherlands, with 200+ rainy days a year and commutes that often cover 10 km or more through puddles and soaked cycle paths, this is not a luxury but essential kit. SKS positions the Bluemels as the reliable mid-range fender — not road-bike minimalism, not cargo-bike overkill, but the right size for trekking bikes, city bikes and most Dutch and German e-bikes. Protection is where the Bluemels earns its keep. Ride through a Randstad puddle after a heavy downpour and your back stays dry up to the lumbar area, your shoes pick up far less mud than with a half fender. The rear fender extends nearly to the axle, directing water down instead of shooting it up behind you. The front fender wraps 180 degrees and keeps your thighs and down tube dry. On a 10 km commute in pouring rain, the difference between a Bluemels and a cheap clip-on is literally whether you arrive dry at the office or have to change clothes.
Compared to rivals the Bluemels performs well without being best-in-class everywhere. The Crud RoadRacer Mk3 is lighter and fits road bikes without eyelets, but offers less coverage and feels flexier. The Blackburn Central is cheaper and easier to install, but lacks the Secu-Clip safety release and the aluminium reinforcement. The Zefal Paragon competes directly on price and quality, but has a slightly narrower mount range and fewer tint-colour options. The Bluemels sits squarely in the middle: pricier than entry-level, but with a finish and lifespan that survives five to seven years of daily use — even through Dutch winters with road salt.
Honest about the weaknesses: installation is not a Sunday morning job if your frame lacks eyelets, which means messing around with P-clips or adapters. On road bikes with under 32 mm tyre clearance the Bluemels simply does not fit — you will have to pivot to the Crud RoadRacer. The included mud flap is also on the skimpy side; for group rides, a longer XtraDry flap (sold separately) is effectively mandatory if you want to stay friends with the rider behind you. And while the aluminium reinforcement protects against warping, sticks or stones wedging between fender and tyre remain a real risk — which is where that Secu-Clip finally pays off.
Who is this for?
- Commuters on trekking or city bikes covering 10+ km daily in Dutch rain
- E-bike riders protecting their investment from mud and road salt
- Touring riders who want to stay clean on wet forest paths
What to watch out for
- Will not fit road bikes with under 32 mm tyre clearance
- Without frame eyelets you will need extra adapters for mounting
- Stock mud flap is too short for group rides

Pros and cons
Pros
- Full coverage — front and rear wheels stay dry on typical Dutch rainy days
- Secu-Clip safety mount releases if something jams the wheel, preventing endos
- Aluminium-reinforced body is stiffer than pure plastic budget rivals
- Fits tyres up to 42 mm wide — works on trekking bikes and most e-bikes
Cons
- Installation needs frame eyelets or an adapter — not every road bike fits
- Mud flaps are on the short side; riders behind you still get sprayed
