Best summer cycling accessories for 2026
Peak months: mei, juni, juli
The Dutch summer is short, intense and often surprisingly hot. Between May and July cycling mileage peaks: to work, to the beach, to festivals and on holiday. With this summer-accessory guide we walk you through the purchases that really make a difference above 25 degrees.
Hydration: bottle and bottle cage
Above 22 degrees you lose an average of 0.5 to 1 liter of fluid per hour on the bike. That cannot be caught up with one glass of water at the office. Even on short 15-minute city rides you feel the difference by half-day whether you had a bottle or not.
Choose a BPA-free bottle of 500 to 750 ml. Camelbak Podium Chill or Elite Fly measurably keep contents cooler in direct sunlight. An aluminum thermos flask goes further but weighs twice as much.
Mount a cage on the frame triangle: most frames have pre-drilled eyelets. No frame holes? Clamp-on models like the Topeak Modula Cage II solve it without drilling. Budget 15 to 25 euros for bottle plus cage together.
Sun protection: helmet and glasses
A black helmet in direct sunlight can reach 45 degrees inside. Go for a light-colored, well-ventilated helmet with at least 18 vents. The POC Omne Air Spin is an excellent example, as are the Giro Agilis and Bell Formula MIPS.
Cycling glasses are not a luxury but a safety item: they keep insects, dust, pollen and ultraviolet light out of your eyes. Yellow or clear lenses for overcast, dark-grey or mirrored polarized lenses for high summer. Brands like Oakley, Rudy Project and Tifosi start around 70 euros.
Also always apply SPF 30 or higher to face, ears and neck for rides longer than an hour. Cyclists often forget the tops of the ears, exactly where many skin cancers appear.
Vacation gear: panniers and navigation
The Dutch ride on holiday in huge numbers, from the Wadden Islands to the Pieterpad. A rack-and-pannier setup is what makes holiday cycling actually work without back pain from a rucksack on kilometer 50.
The Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic has been the Dutch standard for three decades: 40 liters, fully waterproof, lifetime guarantee. For short trips a set of Basil Sport Design or Vaude Aqua Back Light is plenty.
Navigation these days is mostly phone-based. A handlebar mount like the Quad Lock Bike Kit gives the phone a safe, vibration-damped spot. For long junction-based routes a cycling-specific GPS (Garmin Edge) is handier, with 14+ hours of battery life.
Anti-theft for terrace stops
Summer means lots of short stops: terrace, ice-cream parlor, quick shopping, swimming pool. It is precisely in those 'just two minutes' moments that 60 percent of all Dutch bike thefts take place. An 8-euro cable lock is not enough then.
Always use at least an ART-2 lock, even for short stops. A folding lock like the Abus Bordo 6000 is compact enough to carry under the saddle and quick to deploy. Lock the bike to a fixed object, not just to itself.
As a backup: an Apple AirTag in a hidden bike-finder mount gives you a recovery chance after theft. A 35-euro one-off, no subscription. Also read our bike security guide.
Festival and beach setups
The Dutch summer is festival and beach season: from Pinkpop to Zandvoort, from Lowlands to Scheveningen. That calls for different accessories than weekday commuting.
A fat bike rolls through soft sand to the beach bar effortlessly where a city bike bogs down at the dune entrance. With 4-inch tires at 0.4 bar you can ride from Zandvoort to Bloemendaal along the beach. For light beach rides a normal city bike with tires of 2.0 inches or wider is enough.
Always take a Knog Oi Luxe bell along that rings rather than clunks: at crowded festival grounds that feels friendlier. A compact cable lock plus an AirTag is the go-to combo for festivals, where locks get stacked over each other and quick identification matters. Do not forget a power bank for phone navigation at end of day.

Frequently asked questions
How much water should I carry on a summer ride?
Plan for 500 ml per hour at 25 degrees. At 30 degrees or more, 750 ml per hour. For rides over two hours, a second bottle is advisable.
Is a helmet required in the Netherlands?
No, for normal bikes and regular e-bikes a helmet is not legally required. Only speed pedelecs (45 km/h) require a speed-pedelec helmet.
Can my bike stand in the sun?
Short periods are fine. At temperatures above 30 degrees, long direct sun can degrade e-bike batteries and push tires over pressure. Park in the shade when possible.
What is the best tire pressure in summer?
Slightly higher than in winter: air expands at high temperatures. For city bikes around 4 to 4.5 bar, for road tires 6.5 to 7.5 bar. Always consult the marking on your tire.
Which accessories should I take to a festival?
A solid ART-2 lock, an AirTag in a hidden mount, a power bank, a compact rain jacket (Dutch summer!) and a clear-sounding bell are the minimum kit.
